Az & Miri

LARGER IMAGE
  Az & Miri - $9.00

Nearly sixteen years ago a pregnant kitty wandered into our lives. Five days later she gave us six grand-kitties, five of them calico girls, born on my Gram's birthday. It was a sign.........Two of the kitties were adopted by my sons; and wouldn't you know it? They were my favorites! But I never encouraged them to choose these two. Jeff chose Azrael, who was his partner in crime in many things, even moving cross-country to Colorado. She was a lover and very vocal and talked with me on the phone many times. She was especially colorful. We lost her in 2015. Steve took Miriamele, named after a character in a book he had read. Not as colorful or vocal, but just as sweet and loving. We lost her in 2016. This design is a tribute to them and the loving sons who cared for them.

Broken Tulips

LARGER IMAGE
  Broken Tulips - $9.00

I needed a tissue holder for our bedroom and "saw" this design when I found the surface. These tulips on a tissue holder are easier to paint than you might think!

Tulips were brought to Europe from Turkey in the mid- to late-16th century. Amsterdam merchants were very successful and built grand estates surrounding flower gardens and the tulip, with its vibrant color, was the centerpiece. Tulips soon became a coveted luxury item. During the late-16th century, a virus infected tulips, causing them to "break" and create "flame-like effects" on the petals. These interesting flowers became highly prized and began a time in history known as "Tulipomania". "Tulipomania" peaked in spring of 1637 and some bulbs sold for more than ten times the annual income of skilled craftspeople.

Easter Fraktur

LARGER IMAGE
  Easter Fraktur - $8.50

Watercolor and ink were the mediums used for painting frakturs (a folk art form produced by Pennsylvania Germans mainly during the mid-eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth centuries. The name comes from a German script marked by "fractured" pen strokes and it has roots in European folk culture. Fraktur became a rich and colorful form in the United States and was used to create birth records, wedding records, death records, etc.) Painted on wooden dominoes, this design is my interpretation of this art-form. This design is very functional and can be used in many ways. This photo shows the dominoes in a faux- grained frame, making it look a bit more like the antique it resembles.   Life, Liberty, and The Pursuit of Happiness - $8.50

This design is painted on wooden dominoes which you can make into pins, necklaces, or use to decorate a small space in your home! Butterflies are the symbols of New Life, so I chose to paint a butterfly for "Life". The Liberty Bell on the "Liberty" domino is pretty self-explanatory! I think sunflowers are such happy flowers, so I used that image on "The Pursuit of Happiness".

I looked out my kitchen window one evening in the midst of winter and saw this scene. It reminded me that even in the midst of darkness, there is light!   Love - $7.50

This design is based on letters found on an alphabet print made by Carrington Bowles in 1782, also known as "the comical hotch potch". In the eighteenth century, toys were to be used to teach. Many times a print would be cut with scissors for the child to reassemble as a learning tool. Knowledge was something to be valued; only the wealthy could afford schools or tutors for their children. These caricatures on blocks add a touch of whimsy to your decor!

A Mother's Love

LARGER IMAGE
  A Mother's Love - $8.50

"The London Foundling Hospital was founded by royal charter in 1739. Its work with children has continued uninterrupted to the present day, now carried on by Coram, the modern charity that inherited the Hospital’s mission. The charity has, from the beginning, endeavored to keep the fullest possible records of the children n its care. Its archive is "vast, requiring some 250 metres of shelving for the ledgers and entry book used to record the lives of thousands of forsaken children. Yet"..it comes as a surprise to discover 5,000 small textile items dating from the middle decades of the eighteenth century, pinned to the registration documents that recorded the entry of each baby to the Hospital. They include the whole range of textile fabrics worn by ordinary women in mid-eighteenth century, along with ribbons, embroidery, and even some baby clothes. Both beautiful and poignant, each scrap of material reflects the life of a single infant child and that of its absent parents." John Styles in Threads of Feeling. Most, if not all, of poor women in the mid-eighteenth century were illiterate. If chosen to be allowed to leave her child with the hospital (a "ballot" was held for admission. A white ball meant admission; a black ball meant rejection), the Mother would leave a strip of fabric, ribbon, etc. as a way to identify her child, should she be able to return and take her child home. Most Mothers were not able to bring their children home.

I saw the display "Threads of Feeling" in Colonial Willamsburg and was very moved and saddened to learn this story. This design is my way of honoring and remembering all involved. I know this is long, but I think the story is important to the design.

Myan Children of the Corn

Myan Children of the Corn - $8.00

The Mayans believed they were created by gods who added their own blood to flour made from corn, a plant native to their Central American homelands. Thus, they were children of the corn. Though their empire is long gone, the Mayans live on. An estimated 1.5 million to 4.5 million descendants of the Mayans inhabit southern Central America. In Mexico's Yucatan region, many residents still speak Maya languages and wear clothing virtually indistinguishable from that depicted in ancient carvings. And, like their ancestors, they pursue a spiritual life. I saw a film about today’s Mayans and their struggles at the Cleveland International Film Festival. This design is dedicated to them.
