The design painted on this hand-crafted document box with bale handle is my interpretation of one most likely made in the Oliver Filley Tin Shop in Bloomfield, CT and possibly decorated by Edward Francis who was known to have worked for Filley and where he learned "the art, trade, or mystery of Japaning and making, preparing, and using all and every kind of Japan, Varnish, etc. and making and preparing all kinds of paints used in painting and flowering tinware....also to instruct him in the art of painting and flowering". The decoration is consistent with that found in the Filley shop. Francis was known to fill the areas with his painting. However it is possible the design was painted by a female member of the family working in the shop. Complimentary colors of red, yellow, blue make it perfect for any decor. 8”x4”x7” Antiquing, to tone down the colors, is available at an extra cost.
