Broken Tulips

packet.name

I needed a tissue holder for our bedroom and "saw" this design when I found the surface. These tulips on a tissue holder are easier to paint than you might think! Tulips were brought to Europe from Turkey in the mid- to late-16th century. Amsterdam merchants were very successful and built grand estates surrounding flower gardens and the tulip, with its vibrant color, was the centerpiece. Tulips soon became a coveted luxury item. During the late-16th century, a virus infected tulips, causing them to "break" and create "flame-like effects" on the petals. These interesting flowers became highly prized and began a time in history known as "Tulipomania". "Tulipomania" peaked in spring of 1637 and some bulbs sold for more than ten times the annual income of skilled craftspeople.
