Rufus Porter Needlework Carrier

packet.name

I'm calling this a needlework carrier, but it has so many other uses! While great for your knitting, crocheting, cross-stitch, it can also be used as a purse, a lunch container, remote control caddy, etc., etc. As Rufus might say, “The world is yours. Use it to your best advantage”! This is my interpretation of two murals done by Porter in the Daniel Carr house in North Haverhill, New Hampshire, dating c. 1825-1830. These scenes were “woven into the story of Frances Parkinson Keyes’ Also the Hills and reproduced as endpapers”. As of the 1940’s, these murals were still in excellent condition. There are a few ships missing from the original, but I did include a flatboat, which he incorporated into many of his designs although not in these, since he did spend time on one. Although I didn’t mix my own pigments, I tried to use bottled acrylics as close to what the original might have been in designing this project. The colors may be brighter than we’re used to seeing; but in the 18 and 19 century, bright colors were very popular in helping to bring light and brightness into the home. I did antique over everything to help “bring it down”, but you may want to add more or less antiquing to suit yourself.
